Spiritual Direction in Daily Life

Nina H. Frost

I initially worked in publishing before starting "The Corporate Word," a copywriting and editing firm. That focus shifted in my late 30s, when I was drawn to using words in a new way: to help people articulate their gifts in the confounding task called job search.

To work at both the language and the big picture level with people, I enrolled in various programs: Adult Career Development certificate at NYU; the Masters in Spiritual Direction at the General Theological Seminary of the Episcopal Church; the "What Color is Your Parachute?" workshop with Richard Bolles, and various courses in Jungian psychology and pastoral counseling.

I founded The Vocare Group with two colleagues, gave workshops in discernment, co-wrote a book called “Soul Mapping: An Imaginative Way to Self-Discovery,” and worked with midlife clients in career transition. Later, I combined this work with a staff position at Marble Collegiate Church, where for over 25 years I created adult programming, and offered talks, workshops and retreats at Marble and other churches in New York and Virginia, including those pastored by my husband, the Rev. Robert Close. This career focus naturally shifted over time into transitions in general and how to navigate them.

What remains at this point in my life is the desire to bring these strands together in the ongoing task of deep listening to what life is revealing, asking, offering. "Call" is lifelong; "work" is broad indeed; "transitions" are everywhere and I do believe the mystery we call God is at the heart of it all.

May this site be a companion along your way. By way of further introduction, here is the text from a recent talk on vocation I gave at my 50th High School Reunion.
